SKAGS - 'Digital Cage of a Cursed Generation'
The record is a rock-fueled thrill ride from start to finish and it talks on the current climate of the digital era we are living in. The sad truth of how people would rather use things like social media than converse in real life.
The album is dedicated to the band's generation who grew up in the early 90’s and saw the destruction of the economic crisis. The main intention of the songs is to alter your perspective on the world.
From “Zak” which talks on victims of law and violence, to “The Guillotine” which talks about the inevitable destruction of our planet. There’s plenty in the slick selection of tracks to sink your teeth into and learn something from.
Track by Track description
1. Turn It On:
Personal demons. Fears. Whispers . Voices that keep spinning right round in your head on an endless loop.
Don't be afraid! Escape! Turn It On, is about all these things that keep you on this loop, on this inactivity.
2. Zak:
~If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stomping on a human face—for ever.~ George Orwell. September 21, 2018. Middle of the day. In a busy street in the center of Athens, a person gets brutally kicked. People walk by. People stand by. People take out their phones, to capture the image. People just watch.
Zak, Zackie, died that day. Marginalised, unwanted, invisible, suffocating. Zackie was cannibalized by a society that deeply fears anyone that differs.
Anyone with a different skin colour, different sexual orientation, different beliefs. Anyone with a strong voice. May all of us, who betrayed them when they needed us the most, at least stand up for their memory. Zak is dedicated to Zak Kostopoulos , George Floyd and to all victims of law and violence.
3. Put Your Hands Down:
Put Your Hands Down, is a personal imprint of the economic crisis time in Greece. A never ending circle that also affected music, with the same melody, with the same groove and more impontangly with the same phrase Put Your Hands Up , playing over and over again in mostly all of the songs.
4. The Consequence Of Dream:
The main meaning of the song can be described with 4 small phrases: Never give up! Try harder! Chase your dreams! Dream!
The melody that plays in the bridge of the song, , is what the band imagines, as the music that our brain listens to , when we are dreaming.
5. The Weekend:
Don't let the days pass and wait only for the weekend. Love your friends , love your life. Take the most of every second, every minute. After all, Money is just an obsession, you are barefoot till you die.
Live!
6. The Guillotine:
Fires. Billions of dead animals. Air and Water Pollution. Ice melting. Global warming. Plastic and toxic wastes in our seas and food. These are just a few natural disasters that mankind is responsible for.
The Guillotine is shifting and soon is gonna fall, cutting through our planet. Till now no serious measures have been taken. All these disasters are connected to each other and they will keep on happening unless everyone is willing to change individually. The time for change has come. Join the cause and save the planet. The Guillotine is inspired by and dedicated to our planet's suffering and sacrifice to human "evolution".
7. Life:
They are making you afraid of sunshine. They want you to serve and join their cause. They are forcing you to stay in the shadows.Left alone in your dark and lonely soul.
Is this the life you want to live ?
8. Drive me Home:
Last night in my dream, it all felt true. The fire in my veins was so real. You and me alone into the sea. Into the water.
You said to me I Loved you but Drive Me Home... Drive me Home is about all these unaccomplished love stories.
9. The Man Sitting Right Next Door:
How many times have you wondered who are the people living in the same building with you ? How many times have you felt completely alone in a place full of people ? How many times have you felt your apartment is like a cell that you are locked in? The Man Sitting Right Next Door, describes the loneliness in the big cities.

Skags: Digital Cage Of A Cursed Generation (Self Released) [Matt Bladen]
This was interesting prospect when it dropped into our inbox, Athenian band Skags, refer to themselves as "Alternative Electronic Psychedelic Rock" with influences such as Archive, Radiohead, M83, The Pineapple Thief. I had a feeling that this could either work well or it may be a little to self-indulgent but as I pressed play on their debut album Digital Cage Of A Cursed Generation, I'll will admit I was hooked as the band sound an awful lot like British band Touchstone or Dutch act Lesoir, the fusion of synthwave-like electronics are met with poppy prog rock and the ethereal vocals, similar to recently reactivated band Pure Reason Revolution. Skags deal with the the "social issues we deal with in the digital era" especially the financial crisis that hit Greece hard. Now Digital Cage Of A Cursed Generation has pretty much every style of music I love, 80's synth pop/prog/art rock all displaying their colours and influence throughout the nine tracks.
Using the more progressive, electronic ambient textures they can really delve deep into the emotions behind this with songs such as Put Your Hands Down having the soulful male vocals matched by some strings and bubbling guitar riff that shifts into the heavily synth backed The Consequence Of Dream with those poppy female vocals. For me though The Weekend is my favourite track on the album with a strong Pink Floyd influence filtered through Eastern sounds and a darkness of Crippled Black Phoenix though Life also ranks highly with Anathema/Steven Wilson catchiness, a sweet solo too. When I came across this album I was a little sceptical due to my love of all things arty/proggy but after one listen I was hooked, with subsequent listens unveiling more little nuances that kept me coming back to it. A strong debut from a band that I would love to see next time in Greece. 8/10

INCOMING! Of Wolves are a raw and heavy blend of Punk and Metal from Stoner Sludge to Hardcore and Post Punk. This devastatingly intense form of Crust is what these guys like to call therapy. The songs deal with stress, disillusionment, social injustice, anger, politics and religion. Their songs and sound are directly in touch with the world as it is today and are meant to de-program the sleeping masses with a straightforward approach of brutal force and raw intensity
From Steve Sherwood (vocalist/guitarist): ‘Balance has been a huge undertaking and a long time coming. The album is a culmination of jams that turned into songs over time. It seems our songs take a bit longer because we let them write themselves. It is a very fluid process and over time they become what they are. We prefer it because it is very natural and not forced. Balance is what got me through the hardest of times. Our songs tend to jump the gamut as we love so many genres and styles but as time has gone on, we have become heavier and heavier. This is mainly because the world around us is such a shitshow and it is an honest response to all the moronic absurdity that greed and control have trapped us all into. We never set out or meant to be considered a political band in any way. We see our songs as being about humanity and empathy rather than politics. This album is about release. About love and loss. Personally, we think there is nothing heavier than that. It is about being a good human being rather than scum and I would like to think most of us have had enough of it. We, as a society, are only as strong as our weakest link and, in that regard, we are all one and we need to learn to stand together as a whole. Only then can we live in the paradise that this earth is meant to be. Not to be enslaved by the greedy hoarders who seem hell bent on having it all whilst destroying everything in their wake, leaving the rest of us just enough to barely survive.’ ‘Balance’ is out now! It's available via digital download and limited-edition CD and cassette. Ben Wood & The Bad Ideas Bio and achievements
Whilst starting out as a performer in London and a busker on the London Underground, Ben Wood was offered the unique opportunity to contribute to an X-Ray spex charity album in the US - one of only two UK bands who were offered the privilege. Ben had to find a band and put a track together and send it over in 48 hours. Amazingly, he pulled it all together and formed his band, Ben Wood and The Bad Ideas from the experience: the name was a reference to his trepidation about the previous situation. They went on to play many stages: Prince Charles’ Garden Party, the Yes To Life Festival and release their compilation track, Obsessed with You as their debut single. The band’s 2018 release “The Reveal” featured Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello and the Attractions) on bass. In 2020 the band will be releasing a single per month for a year. The band’s 2020 offerings will have guest spots from legendary musicians such as Dave Barbarossa of Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow, Billy Ritchie of 60s prog pioneers Clouds (Ritchie famously introduced a young David Bowie to Jimi Hendrix) and even Paul Cook of The Sex Pistols. LA based musician Nick Maybury (Juliette & The Licks/ Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts) and Mike Webster of Asylums (and former Baddies frontman) will also feature on guitar. All of the band’s monthly 2020 singles to date, including the new release “Bombing Along”, have been spun by legendary Los Angeles DJ, Rodney Bingenheimer on 'The Rodney Bingenheimer Show' as well as charting on the 'Radio Indie Alliance' chart alongside the likes of Greenday. The Band have also featured on Planet Rock Radio and the BBC. Ben Wood (Vocals & Guitar). Ben has a gravelly croon, whisky-cracked and ever eccentric. “Wood’s vocals are captivating” (Ringmaster Review / Pete Ring). His guitar playing is percussive from the years spent playing solo and busking on the London Underground where one instrument needs to fill space, make it count and sound like a band. Ben plays a 1972 Fender Mustang in Pink, a 1965 Fender Mustang in Daphne blue and a Gibson Les Paul Goldtop. Andy Duke (Bass Guitar/ Backing Vocals). Andy’s bass parts root the band. Every note he plays sings for its supper and he uses space in a way that is ceremonious. Sonically, he is a sedulous architect whether it’s writing, recording or live. Andy plays a Fender P Bass, Fender Jazz Bass and Gibson SG Bass. Clive Bissell (Drums/ Backing vocals). Clive Bissell is a force of nature. He hits where it counts and you feel every push and pull of the rhythm section. Clive drums like a songwriter: ever concerned with urgency and arrangement that is as tight as cramp. Clive plays a Pearl Kit, Paiste cymbals, Vic Firth sticks and Remo Rototoms. Ed Sonsino (Lead Guitar/ Backing vocals). Ed’s parts shimmer, grabbing the audience and they don’t let go until they’ve had their fill. Ed plays a Gibson Les Paul Studio, a Gibson Les Paul Standard and a Fender Stratocaster. Ben Wood & The Bad Ideas play Fender, Gibson and Marshall.
